Our Past
Northern Lights was established in 1985 in response to requests from the Ministry of Community and Social Services (Vocational Rehabilitation Services Program) to provide short-term vocational assessment, training, and job placement services in rural areas of Ontario.
Since 1985, we have expanded our referral base to include Service Canada, Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) Ontario, Worker's Compensation Board (WCB) Alberta, Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) - Employment Supports Program of the Ministry of Community and Social Services (MCSS), Ontario Works, insurance companies, doctors, lawyers, other private rehabilitation companies, and transfer payment agencies.
Northern Lights Today
Today, Northern Lights Durham offers many programs. Two of these, The Employment Advantage and Work Links For Women, are funded by the Government of Canada.

In addition to the above services, Northern Lights is also involved in consultation and training activities, across Canada and internationally, on an as needed basis. As programs have developed, the need for highly skilled staff has increased, seeing the company grow to 200 in 2006.
Our current range of services includes three streams:
  • Employment and Counselling Services
  • Vocational Rehabilitation
  • Corporate Business Services
Experience with Participants
Northern Lights has a broad scope of experience working with people in career transition, receiving employment insurance, and receiving other forms of social support. We have worked extensively with clients who face a diverse range of disabilities to employment.
We view each program participant as an individual and we have assisted clients in a range of circumstances including job retention/job maintenance issues, lack of skills, education, or disabilities. As a result, some participants have been successful at eliminating some of the employment supports they might have been receiving.
